The Rise Of Twitter At Site5

A lot of us here at Site5 have been playing with Twitter lately and are very impressed! Twitter is quickily becoming a separate segment of the internet where user’s thoughts fly at lightening speed via short, 140-character strings. At Site5 we use Twitter to see what people are thinking about us and to make sure everyone is happy with our hosting services. It’s also a great way for us to interact with our customers and see what new projects they are up too and if we can help!

If you would like to follow Site5 on Twitter just sign up for a Twitter account and follow our accounts below:

The official Site5 Twitter is at Twitter.com/Site5 and you can also grab the RSS feed here. Currently we are using this account to send blog post notices and to announce what new technologies we are playing with. In the future we will be posting special promotions and coupons, contests, and more as it evolves.

My Site5 Twitter account is located at Twitter.com/BenAtSite5 and you can grab the RSS feed here. I am pretty active in helping our customers, talking about what I’m working on at Site5, and a lot more!

I also highly recommend TweetDeck for managing your Twitter account. It works great and allows you to group your friends and a lot more.

How To Stop Digg From Framing Your Website

Digg has turned to the dark side and started framing all submitted content under their URL and with an obnoxious frame at the top. For an example, just view this to see what the DiggBar does. They are taking the viral nature of Digg and instead of giving the credit to the sites creating the content they are taking it for themselves. This obviously hurts your efforts to build links, which is a crucial part of the search engine optimization process.

So how can I stop Digg? Simple!

Add the following line of code before the </head> call in all your HTML.

<script type="text/javascript"> if (top != self) top.location.href = self.location.href; </script>

If you run WordPress just grab this plugin and it will disable it for you as well. I have not tested this plugin so use it at your own risk.

If you what to take it one step further…

If you don’t just want to break the frame but want leave a note for digg users asking them to disable the Digg bar just take a look at this great tutorial by Daring Fireball. If you want to see what he has done just try this Digg link which will show the message he leaves for Digg users.

If you are looking for some background on the SEO results of this change I recommend the following articles: SEOverflow write a nice article on the damage this move makes for site owners, and Digg has an article up on why they think this is not a problem. The damage is less about strict SEO and more about how other sites might link to the shortened digg URL and not your site, thus loosing you very valuable links. Feel free to leave any questions on the comments as we would be glad to answer any questions.
