PHP 5.3 is now available at Site5!

Hey everyone,

PHP 5.3.3 is now available on all Site5 managed services. We’re currently finishing up the deploy to managed dedicated servers and managed VPS’s. The deploy has already been completed for all shared and reseller accounts.

PHP 5.2.x is still the default, so you don’t need to worry if your scripts aren’t 5.3.x compatible yet, but I certainly recommend testing your existing code against the 5.3.x install just to find out how you fare and to start planning for the future!

Files with the extension of .php53 will automatically be processed by PHP 5.3.3.

If you want to extend PHP 5.3.3 parsing to additional extensions, you can do so in your .htaccess file by using the following line:

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php

This will cause all .php files in the directory containing your .htaccess, and any subdirectories, to be processed by PHP 5.3.3.

As always, if you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact support@site5.com.

Enjoy!

  • Is there a description somewhere as to the specific differences between PHP 5.2.x and PHP 5.3.3? I have sites with code dating back to the late 1990s, so a review of the differences would help me determine which sites have to be reviewed.

  • awesome news, great job guys! shared hosts never upgrading their installs because of the huge userbase has always been a problem, and your solution is very elegant. gg!

  • Thanks Luka! We appreciate that! And feel free to email management@site5.com if you have any requests for anything!

  • As always Site5 is the name to trust, Thanks for this amazing upgrade although I’m not planning to go for the 5.3 version right now, But it’s always nice to have that extra option.
    Great and smart solution.
    Thanks again

  • No problem, we aim to please :)

  • Excellent news! I’m gonna move right away as I need it for a new project. Thanks!

  • Wow, nice!

I just recently purchased a VPS so I could use Alloy Framework ( http://alloyframework.org/ ) on some new projects, which requires PHP 5.3. Glad to know I now have the option of running it on my reseller accounts too. Site5 is probably one of the first shared hosts to enable php5.3 across all accounts. Really great news, guys!

    • Welcome!! We have some other surprises coming next month too! Please let me know if you run into any problems, thanks!

  • This might be a question I should have posted in support, but I wanted to ask it here as other people might run into the same issue. I have an account where I added a custom php.ini file (copied the default file from /usr/local/lib/php.ini, added SuPHP_ConfigPath /home/(username) to my htaccess and modified the file upload values in the php.ini file). When I add the line AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php to start using PHP 5.3 in the same htaccess I get a server configuration error. Do I have to use another php.ini file? And where is it located?

    • Can you email support@Site5.com? Our team would love to help and take a look. Off the top of my head I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t work but we can take a closer look!

      • Hi Ben. Thanks for your reply. I have figured it out. PHP 5.3 apparently uses a different default php.ini file located in /usr/local/php53/lib/php.ini. When you use that file as starting point for your customized php.ini file on a PHP 5.3 hosting it works. Guess it’s normal because Site5 currently still offers both 5.2 and 5.3 PHP versions.

  • Gotcha, yep and PHP 4.

  • Is this not available on Cloud VPS hosting? Doesn’t work. Looking around with ssh, I can’t find a php 5.3 executable anywhere.

    • It should be, can you please email management@site5.com and I’ll have the CTO or deputy CTO check that for you.

      Please let me know,
      thanks, Ben
