CloudFlare is here!


We’re excited to announce that CloudFlare integration is now rolling out across all our managed servers! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard about the waves that CloudFlare  are making. They’re the cloud CDN (Content Distribution Network) and security service that’s protecting hundreds of thousands of websites of all sizes from attacks and providing global increases in speed and security. CloudFlare works by providing a worldwide network of servers that visitors to your site connect to, which complement our own global network of locations to ensure that your site is always performing its best.

The CloudFlare servers cache website content, so that static content (eg most images, JavaScript, CSS) is served immediately. At the same time as serving the static content to your users, they communicate with the hosting server to fetch dynamic content. The net result is that your page loads much faster for end users. They also provide an additional layer of security from a wide range of threats, so that malicious traffic never even gets as far as the hosting server.

We’re currently rolling out integration between our SiteAdmin and reseller servers (including managed VPS) and CloudFlare. This integration means that enabling CloudFlare on your website requires just a couple of clicks, without leaving your control panel or messing around with changing nameservers or DNS. Just log into cPanel or SiteAdmin and look for the CloudFlare icon – the instructions will guide you through the process. If the icon’s not there yet, don’t worry – we’ll get to your server soon.

  • What if we already have cloudflare running will this conflict ?

    • I would to like to know this.

    • Nope, it will not conflict. This is simply an easier way to add Cloudflare to your account.

  • Is Site5 an ‘Optimised’ partner of CloudFlare? i.e. does Site5 incorporate CloudFlare’s ‘Railgun’ technology in its app?

    • We are a Cloudflare partner, but we do not have Railgun support at this time.

      • Thank you, I wasn’t sure because although you are listed on Cloudflare under their ‘Certified Hosting Partners’ (i.e. no Railgun) section – at, the tooltip on your logo says:

        ‘Here at Site5 we strive to keep our client’s websites loading as fast as possible and Railgun is a fantastic addition to our arsenal. With Railgun our client’s who publish frequently still gain the huge benefit of caching, keeping their reader’s happy with faster updates and faster page loading. For our team toiling away in the server mines Railgun is a breath of fresh air, it communicates securely and limits transmission to a very compressed data packet’

        Just a mistake obviously, hopefully it means it’s something you are working on.

        • Yep, looks like that is a mistake. We are looking into Railgun, but we wanted to focus on getting the core Cloudflare functionality deployed first as that is what most of our customers have been asking about.

    I am a customer using shared hosting plan. Will all of my static assets will automatically serve via CDN?

      Not unless you set it up with a CDN, or did you mean through CloudFlare?

        • It isn’t really a true CDN but it can help in some cases. I’d recommend reading their site for more info too.

    • CloudFlare has a free tier that is offered to everyone :)

  • I was looking into CloudFlare for my Site5 sites when I moved over from another host about 5 months ago. I have only just enabled it on one of my sites through cPanel and it was simple and easy! Integrates with my existing CF account without any hassles.

  • I can’t see it on my server, I enquired with support and they said it’s not released yet? and I’d be sent an update once it’s available. Bit confused as to when it’s actually going to be ready to use?

      Can you send me your ticket ID? I have verified that it is installed on your server. It is under the “Software / Services” section in SiteAdmin.

        I’ve spoken to another person via the chat system who pointed me in the right direction, I think the previous person was unaware it was installed and where it was.

  • Is cloudflare available on all the plans having cPanel?

    • HI Jason, yes. Cloudflare integration is being deployed to all of our Managed services, which run cPanel and WHM at this time.

  • If I am running on your singapore server and am targeting users mostly from asia, how will cloudfare help me?

    • Hi Ricky!

      CloudFlare offers content acceleration and cache at multiple locations around the world. Which is to say, certain types of media and content can be ‘cached’ or temporarily stored on CloudFlares network for faster delivery to certain areas around the world. If you are targeting Asia, with CloudFlare, content can be automatically cached on their Singapore network, and delivered faster and more efficiently to your Singapore visitors, than it would normally be without the caching.

        Thanks, whoever my server is already hosted in Singapore, and i am targeting Singapore users, will their be any benefit with cloundflare.

        I already use multiple levels of caching on my singapore server (no cdn). My question was if i enable cloudflare will my users IN singapore see any benfit?

        Furthermore, i hear people say that cloundflare is not a true cdn, i am not sure what they mean or if they are even correct, can you shed light on this issue.

        • Hi Ricky,

          If all your users are in the same country as your server and you already employ a caching mechanism, then you’re unlikely to see much in the way of performance gains with CloudFlare. However, there’s more to CloudFlare than just acceleration – it also provides DDoS protection and intelligent threat protection on top on the protection that we have in place for your server.

          CloudFlare is a geographically distributed intelligent caching and threat protection layer. It behaves a lot like a CDN (that’s the distributed caching bit), in that it serves static assets (images, media, JS, etc) from the node closest to your user, but unlike most conventional CDNs, it doesn’t require any changes to your website code in order to use – everything’s done at the hosting layer.

  • I activated it and it took my site down. I deactivated it, and my site is back up. Re-activated it, and my site is back down. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

  • I’ve used CloudFlare on other services. The setup through Site5 was incredibly fast and easy. However, I’ve got a couple of questions.

    Do I need to use the Backstage IP ban manager or log into CloudFlare and use their block/trust list? I’m not sure which data are integrated with the Site5/CloudFlare hosting partner arrangement.

    Also, is there some way to get a feel of how DNS redirects will work when under severe DDOS attacks? How will Site5 react if a severe attack penetrates CloudFlare (it has happened before)? Do Site5 customers need to maintain a mirror site for emergency redirection if all else doesn’t work?

    • Hi there,

      If you wish for the CloudFlare service to handle blocking or trusting of IPs, it would be done thru their control panel, at With regard to DNS redirects, it should be seamless across CloudFlare’s Accelerated DNS network. The name resolution for your domain(s) should take place at the nearest CloudFlare POP (a list of which are available here: ). If a DDoS penetrates CloudFlare and is affecting your site or the server your site is on, we will use our own Threat Management systems (if necessary) to attempt to mitigate the attack.

  • Since I’ve activated cloudflare, I’m having trouble getting my stylesheet to update in WordPress. Is it caching that, and if so, what can I do to stop it or force a refresh?

    • Hi Jodi,

      I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with CloudFlare! It sounds like you are hitting caching issues – in general, it’s best to only use CloudFlare when your site is running normally and to disable it during periods of active development, so that you can be certain that you’re seeing the latest version of your site. If you disable CloudFlare during development and testing, you should be able to avoid this – then just re-enable it when you’re done and enjoy the benefits! If you have any further issues, please do get in touch with Support and they’ll be more than happy to help you work through any issues you’re having.

          • Is there a way to clear the cache without disabling and reactivating it each time?

            • I’ve not had a problem when I simply click the development mode option. 95% or so of our sites are WordPress.

            • Hi Jodi,

              There certainly is! If you log into the CloudFlare website, you can clear the cache – click on the gear icon next to the site that you’re working on, click ‘CloudFlare Settings’, and there’s a ‘Cache Purge’ option. There’s also ‘development mode’, which disables CloudFlare for 3 hours.

              Reseller customers can also do this via the cPanel plugin (CloudFlare > Settings and Statistics > Clear Cache) but this isn’t currently available in SiteAdmin.
